FTE/Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week, non-exempt
Salary Range: $19.00-$21.00/per hour
Location: Worcester, Massachusetts
Term: Position is funded through 8/31/2022. There is a possibility for permanent extension or renewal that will be determined no later than July 2022.

Organization Description: The American Antiquarian Society is a learned society and national research library dedicated to collecting, preserving, and providing access to the printed record of the United States through 1876. The Society’s collections are used by scholars, students, creative and performing artists, and writers in many fields studying and working with American history and culture. Under the direction of the Head of Readers Services, the assistant will perform a variety of duties within the Readers’ Services department, the reading room, and at the reception desk. The library assistant will work to facilitate the research process for readers while ensuring the security and integrity of library materials.
- Page and re-shelve collections materials
- Monitor the reference desk and reading room to ensure collections security and proper handling of materials
- Oversee reader’s use of collection materials and ensure all reading room procedures are followed
- Monitor and troubleshoot processes within the online request system
- Interview and provide reading room orientations to new readers, explaining collection handling policies and reading room procedures (including the online catalog, digital resources, and the online request system)
- Provide research support for readers in person and remotely
- Act as liaison between readers and other staff as necessary
- Open and close the reading room each day, keeping it organized
- Prepare research quality photocopies and digital reproductions of materials
- Assist with operations at the reception desk, allowing receptionists to take breaks as needed
- Update stacks maps and range labels when collection locations change
- Assist in training of summer pages and interns
- Other duties as assigned
PHYSICAL DEMANDS and WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Duties require periods of standing, walking, sitting. Duties require occasional periods of climbing or balancing, pulling/pushing items including book trucks with materials, lifting/carrying items weighing up to approximately 30 lbs., reaching with arms and hands. Vision and hearing at or correctable to “normal ranges.” Other physical tasks include use of hands for basic grasping/manipulation, use of hands for fine manipulation, occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching, keyboarding. Physical duties are subject to change.
Most duties are performed indoors in office environment with artificial light and cool, thermostatically controlled temperatures. The noise level is low. May be exposed to dust, mold, and/or other organic material or other irritants. Hazards are considered minor and controllable.
This is a non-exempt full time, 35 hour per week position (40 hours with 1 hour unpaid lunch per day). Library hours are M-F 9-5.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:
The range for this position is $19.00-$21.00 per hour.
