The Branch Manager works 37.5 hours per week and can anticipate working one to two evenings per week and one Saturday and one Sunday per month.
NATURE OF WORK:
The Evanston Public Library is seeking a leader and innovator to manage our library branch at the Robert Crown Community Center. This candidate will support and grow a staff that reflects and engages with our diverse population in order to plan, deliver and continuously evaluate collections, programs and practices that provide equitable access to library and community resources. This librarian will engage with a variety of individuals and organizations in Evanston, and particularly with the staff of the Youth and Young Adult Division and Parks and Recreation Department, with whom we share the Crown facility, in order to partner with the community to meet the diverse expectations and needs of Evanston residents.
Regularly recruits, trains, schedules and evaluates branch staff to ensure teamwork, high quality customer service and innovative programming based on and in cooperation with community members and organizations. Mentors staff to this end including identifying and providing appropriate training. Administers disciplinary action, including oral and written
Establishes practices and procedures that ensure equitable access to resources for all Evanston residents and regularly explores the frontiers of these practices and procedures based on engagement with the community.
Maintains current knowledge of the Library’s collections and electronic resources as well as other resources in the community and beyond in order to provide for the information
requests of patrons, as well as teaching the staff and the public how to use these resources.
In cooperation with Main Library staff, participates in the selection of library materials and identifies materials to be weeded from the collection. Awareness of the community and its culture, interests and needs will influence these tasks. Works with Crown staff and adjacent Main Library staff to plan, manage and advocate for the branch budget.
Meets with individuals and organizations in the community to build sustainable partnerships particularly. Provides tours and speaks to groups entering the library. Represents the library to other organizations.
Serves as senior staff member in charge of the facility. Staffs public desk as needed.
Under the supervision of the Assistant Director, work is performed with the guidance of managerial staff. The individual has contact with other Library institutions and staff at all levels, and uses the necessary resources to meet and achieve goals and/or objectives. Work is assigned through specific projects and customer/clientele requests. The employee is responsible for prioritizing work tasks for subordinates and self, and for identifying and utilizing the appropriate resources to resolve a problem or situation and/or research and analyze specific requests. Work performance is reviewed through observation, completion of projects, status reports, conferences and meetings. Leadership of Crown Branch team members, competence of staff, public service provided, innovation and morale are all functions for which the employee will be evaluated. Guidance is provided through the City Code, departmental policies, City operating practices and procedures, and other resources as applicable to specific projects assigned. Work is evaluated at least annually, with respect to customer service, problem-solving ability and performance of employee and Crown team in accordance with this classification standard.
The employee has regular and frequent contact with the general public.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
This position requires a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science and a minimum of three years working experience in a supervisory position, including direct responsibility for recruiting, hiring, training, mentoring and disciplining staff.
Ability to lead employees in a positive, professional and collaborative manner and provide orientation to new employees and on-going training to employees, interns and volunteers and communication with members of the public as to the policies and procedures of performing library services.
Ability to review and document the work of team members and ensure that high standards are achieved and deficiencies are corrected.
Experience working with middle and high school patrons and knowledge of best practices related to working with this age group.
Knowledge of current management principles and practices, incorporating fair and inclusive standards.
Ability to lead the Family Engagement Coordinator and the Branch Assistants in planning and executing programs in the library and the community independently and in partnership with individuals and organizations.
Familiarity with library collections and literature for adults, teens and children.
Considerable knowledge of and ability to use Internet search engines, word processing software, email, on-line computer catalogs and Windows operating systems.
Ability to communicate effectively and comfortably in public.
Ability to define problems, collect data, draw valid conclusions and plan reasonable actions based on these conclusions.
Ability to engage with diverse community members to learn their concerns and aspirations and plan together for programming and resources.
Ability to prioritize many variable duties, requests and responsibilities.
Ability to prepare business letters, expositions, summaries, and reports, that communicate clearly.
Ability to transport self and library materials to various locations throughout Evanston. Requires valid IL driver's license.
Foreign language proficiency is highly desired, particularly Spanish.
SPECIAL LICENSES AND REQUIREMENTS:
Master’s degree in Library and Information Science required from a program accredited by the American Library Association. At least three years of experience directly supervising staff.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:
The ability to work in a primarily sedentary position, with the ability to occasionally use force to exert up to 50 pounds. The ability to lift, carry or otherwise move objects, books, materials, etc. using up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
The employee is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions: protection from weather conditions, but not necessarily from indoor temperature changes. As programs and services are provided both within the library and throughout the community, the ability to organize materials and transport self and library materials to offsite locations is required.
There are no environmental hazards associated with this classification.
