Head of Learning, Research & Engagement Services
The primary activities of library faculty members are professional librarian responsibilities; research, scholarship, or creative activity; and service to the University, the profession, and the community.
The Head of Learning, Research & Engagement Services will lead the development of new and innovative services supporting teaching, learning, research, and engagement services and will develop goals for advancing the library’s research, instruction, and engagement efforts.   The librarian will work collaboratively with fellow librarians, instructional faculty, library staff, and student support services personnel. The librarian will exercise broad independent judgment under the general direction of the Associate Dean and with guidance from the Dean.
Primary Responsibilities include:
  • Lead comprehensive evaluation and assessment in the following areas: information literacy instruction, encompassing both one-shot and credit-bearing instruction delivered through various modalities; library research services; and broader assessment efforts in student learning and academic success with campus partners.
  • Work with liaison librarians to develop strategies for embedding information literacy into the curriculum.
  • Collaborate with library and campus partners in the design, development, and integration of effective and high-quality learning materials that support instruction, information literacy skills, and the use of library resources and services.
  • Collaborate with the Center for Effective Teaching & Learning (CETL), the Office of Research, Scholarship & Creative Activity (ORSCA), The Center for Academic Success (CAS), Information Technology Services (ITS), Cal State LA Faculty, and other university partners to support and advance faculty teaching, learning, and research initiatives.
  • Develop and lead student engagement and outreach library services and strategies in collaboration with library colleagues and university partners to support and advance student success initiatives.
  • Provide library instruction and reference/research services to students.
  • Serve as liaison librarian to one or more academic departments/programs, modeling best practices and performing all the duties and functions of a liaison librarian, including collection development, instruction, and outreach.
Service to the University generally includes working collaboratively and productively with colleagues on college, university-wide, and/or system-wide committees and participating in traditional academic functions such as Convocation and Commencement.

Minimum Qualifications:
1) MLS/MLIS or equivalent from an ALA-accredited library institution is required at the time of application.
2) Demonstrated professional library experience providing services related to teaching, learning, and research services.
3) Experience providing student and/or campus engagement and outreach services.
4) Knowledge of current issues and trends in library support of research, scholarship, learning, student engagement, and student academic success.
5) Ability to demonstrate a commitment to working effectively with faculty, staff, and students in a multicultural/multiethnic urban campus environment with a substantial population of first-generation students.
Preferred Qualifications:
1) Demonstrated understanding of the teaching, research, and learning process in higher education.
2) Demonstrated analytical skills and experience using quantitative and/or qualitative data and methods for assessment to inform decision-making.
3) Familiarity or demonstrated experience using inclusive and culturally sustaining pedagogies that engage students.
4) Knowledge of instructional design theory, principles, and practices.
5) Evidence of experience providing information literacy instruction grounded in information literacy standards and frameworks (e.g., ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education).
