Position Summary
Vancouver Community Library is seeking a full-time (40 hours/week) Senior Public Services Librarian with a Youth Services Focus. We are looking for someone who is willing to lead by example and enjoys actively participating in the daily operation of the branch, including routine circulation duties. This position is responsible for:
  • Work regular shifts in the branch to provide a full range of information services to patrons of all ages including responding to reference and reader’s advisory questions, locating materials, and instructing patrons in using library technology.
  • Taking a lead role for programs, services, and collections for youth ages 0-18 years.  Collaborating with branch staff to plan and implement library programs, promoting library service and building relationships in our community.
  • Work with external and internal partners (FVRL employees, inside and outside of the branch) in order to facilitate outreach and/or partnership with community members. 
  • Representing the library in the community and cultivate community partnerships related to youth, including schools and other youth organizations within the library’s service area.
  • Regularly participating in the management of the branch by acting as the person-in-charge, addressing escalated patron concerns and providing guidance regarding application of policies and procedures to the branch Public Service Assistants and Senior Library Assistants. 
  • Supervising 4-6 Senior Library Assistants.

Compensation & Benefits
Employees with experience matching the minimum education and experience requirements listed above can expect to start earning $27.50/hour. The pay grade for this position spans from $27.50/hour to $41.25/hr. Employees progress through the pay grade by demonstrating successful completion of growth and development activities as set milestones over the course of 20 years. 

This position pays a 5% pay premium for additional language skills. To be eligible for the additional pay employees must pass a test demonstrating verbal and written fluency in languages commonly used in our communities. Examples may include, but are not limited to, Spanish, Russian, Mandarin/Cantonese and American Sign Language. 

We have an excellent benefit package. FVRLibraries covers 90-95% of full-time employees’ health insurance premium cost and 90-100% of dental insurance premium costs.  In addition we provide employees with Life Insurance, AD&D and Long Term Disability Insurance at no cost to the employee.  Employees have the ability to enroll in additional, voluntary life insurance, income protection plans, flexible spending accounts and health savings accounts.

Our employees enjoy 12 paid holidays throughout the year. Full time employees accrue 8 hours of sick leave per month.  The initial vacation leave accrual is 11 hours per month; this increases over time based on years of employment. We also offer other types of paid time off for situations such as jury duty, bereavement leave, inclement weather and more.

Education & Experience Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must have:

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited program or the ability to obtain a Washington State Librarian certification.
  • At least 3 years of related work experience, including customer service
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience or lead worker experience
  • At least 3 years of working with children, 0-18 including planning and implementing programs for youth.
