Brief Summary of Work for this Position
Randall Library at the University of North Carolina Wilmington seeks an Open Knowledge and Research Impact Librarian to serve as the campus expert on open access, research impact, scholarly publishing, copyright and fair use, author rights, and open education.

The Open Knowledge and Research Impact Librarian is part of Randall Library’s Academic & Research Engagement (ARE) division, which collaborates with faculty, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to provide information literacy instruction, assist with research, develop the library collection, provide consultative services supporting research and scholarly communication, and partner on programming, in alignment with the information and research needs of campus stakeholders. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with campus constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, materials, and expertise.

This is an 11-month non-tenure track special faculty position reporting to the Associate Director of Academic & Research Engagement. Minimum annual salary for this position is $59,176. Final salary for the selected candidate will be commensurate with the candidate’s experience, qualifications, and preparation for success in the position.

Upon initial appointment, this position will:

  • Serve as the Library’s functional expert on open knowledge and research impact, including, but not limited to, alternative publishing models, author rights, scholarly visibility and impact, online identity management, and equitable access to UNCW’s scholarly output.
  • Lead the Library’s institutional repository initiatives through promotion and solicitation of content from students and faculty by ingesting content to UNCW’s institutional repository, including the creation of metadata, communication with authors, and development/administration of author profiles.
  • Serve as the Library’s Scholars@UNCW ambassador by promoting it on campus and collaborating with the Library’s Information Technology and Digital Services division and UNCW’s Institutional Research unit to enhance its value.
  • Serve as the Library’s point person on developing open journal publishing services
  • In collaboration with library and campus colleagues, develop strategy around and promote open access publishing at UNCW
  • Serve as a library and campus resource on issues and trends relevant to intellectual property, copyright, fair use, and author rights
  • Lead the Library’s initiatives around the promotion and showcasing of all forms of faculty scholarship and research on campus
  • Consult with faculty, students, and staff and serve as Randall Library’s functional expert on building and maintaining researcher profiles
  • Collaborate with liaison librarians to assist faculty with articulating research impact and managing scholarly reputation utilizing appropriate research metrics, including citation analysis, bibliometrics, altmetrics, and emerging tools.
  • Lead the Library’s open educational resources initiatives, including staying abreast of OER resources and initiatives and serving as a resource for liaison librarians and teaching faculty


Library faculty in the ARE division generally have the following responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with faculty and instructors to create, provide, and assess information literacy instruction for courses where information literacy skills are in development.
  • Provide research and scholarly consultative services to faculty, instructors, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students in areas of focus.
  • Ensure that the library’s collections adequately support curricular and research needs of students, faculty, and staff in areas of focus.
  • Engage with students, faculty, and staff, including collaborative programming such as workshops, panel discussions, fellows’ programs, and exhibits.


As a library faculty member, this position will:

  • Provide in-person and on-call research help during scheduled Library Help Desk shifts, providing individual research assistance in person, by phone, email, and/or chat.
  • Support the mission and strategic plan of Randall Library and engage and participate in library-wide meetings, committees, and decision-making.
  • Participate in university and professional activities, such as research, conference presentations, publications, service, or other evidence of scholarly activity. Randall Library is committed to supporting professional development through time, funding, and mentorship.
  • Keep current with developments in librarianship, particularly in areas related to Academic & Research Engagement.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
ALA-accredited master’s degree in library and information sciences

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with digital content management or repository systems and software applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with copyright and other intellectual property issues in the academic environment.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with open educational resources and their development.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of emerging practices, standards, and trends relating to open knowledge and research impact.
  • Ability to learn, and/or experience with, the creation of asynchronous online learning objects using appropriate instructional technologies.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment with a diverse population of faculty, staff, students, and colleagues.
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, written, and virtual communication skills using a variety of media and technologies.

The library faculty in the Academic and Research Engagement (ARE) division of Randall Library collaborate with faculty, instructors, staff, and students in UNCW academic units to ensure that all stakeholders are engaged with the library at a level that supports their academic, research, and scholarly success. ARE librarians support the information and research needs of faculty, staff, and students through one-on-one consultations, assist in managing the library collection in areas of focus, and partner with stakeholders on programming. Librarians in this division also plan, deliver, and assess information literacy instruction in consultation with faculty and instructors and play a key role in educating faculty and instructors on the information literacy needs of their students. Library faculty in this division proactively engage with constituents to promote the use of library services, facilities, and materials. ARE librarians contribute to the library’s Scholarly Research Services by providing guidance and support to UNCW faculty and graduate students who are conducting and disseminating research, scholarship, and creative works, with an emphasis on those using emerging technologies and techniques.
