CONTRACTED INSTRUCTOR LIBRARIAN
MAIN ADULT DETENTION FACILITY (MADF) SANTA ROSA, CA
20 HOURS PER WEEK – PART-TIME – NO BENEFITS
The Contracted Instructor Librarian is responsible for providing library services to incarcerated
adults at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention Facility (MADF) and assisting with system- wide
reentry services. Sonoma County Library is committed to lifelong learning as well as building
partnerships with agencies serving marginalized communities. Conversational Spanish bilingual
skills are strongly desired.
THE POSITION:
This contracted non-benefited position will have functional responsibility for providing library
services and reentry support to incarcerated adults at the Sonoma County Main Adult Detention
Facility, which is located in Santa Rosa. Responsibilities include programming, circulation,
materials maintenance, and oversight of the on-site library space at the Main Adult Detention
Facility. The position will provide educational and vocational support to adults throughout Sonoma
County and oversight will be provided by the Librarian III, Juvenile Hall and Reentry Services.
GOALS:
• Provide a diverse and updated collection of reference and reading materials.
• Create an environment where incarcerated adults will want to become life-long library
users.
• Create partnerships with prison programs to ensure incarcerated adults' needs are met.
TYPICAL TASKS include, but are not limited to:
• Oversee daily operations of the on-site library space to ensure the smooth and efficient running
of library services.
• Schedule and conduct programming at Main Adult Detention Facility.
• Selection, cataloguing, processing, and maintenance of the collection and materials at the Main
Adult Detention Facility.
• Provide librarian services to patrons at Main Adult Detention Facility including reference,
reader's advisory, educational support, research and literature appreciation.
• Maintains accurate records and submits regular reports to supervisors at Sonoma County Sheriff's
Office and Sonoma County Library.
• Collaborate with Main Adult Detention Facility, including correctional staff and partners to
support the goals of adults in custody.
• Collect accurate statistics on library use to help in resource allocation and improvement
planning.
• Participate in training and professional development to enhance library services.
• Communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with MADF staff.
• Acts as the Person-in-Charge, including making responsible and appropriate decisions based upon
patron and housing module needs.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be the
following:
• Bachelor’s degree in library science or a related field such as education, psychology or
sociology AND
o Three years of increasingly responsible and varied professional library experience. This includes
experience in areas like cataloging, reference work, and selection of library materials.
OR
o Three or more years of increasingly responsible work in a closely related field such as
education, social work, or corrections and reentry services.
DESIRED EXPERIENCE AND ABILITIES:
• MLIS is preferred, but not required
• Has professional work experience in a library program.
• Works well with a diverse population.
• Works independently and exhibits maturity and good judgment.
• Deals with people in a manner which shows sensitivity, tact, and professionalism.
• Experience using Microsoft Office and Canva.
• Knowledge of library terminology, practices, policies and procedures, and an understanding of
the organization of library materials.
• Experience working with law enforcement, jails or the courts.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
• Must be able to pass background check and security clearance to work in the detention facility;
must adhere to terms of the contract and policies of Sonoma County Sherriff’s Office.
• Must pass a pre-employment physical. Persons appointed to this position are expected to have and
maintain sufficient strength, agility, and endurance to perform during stressful (physical, mental,
and emotional) situations encountered on the job without compromising their health and well-being
or that of their fellow employees or of inmates.
PAY INFORMATION:
• $40.00/hour up to 1040 hours per fiscal year ($41,600 annually).
• This is a contracted position and there are no benefits provided.
• The current contract between Sonoma County Library and the County of Sonoma Main Adult Detention Facility expires on 06/30/2026, with an option to extend.
