Through radical collaboration we seek to deepen student and faculty engagement with the libraries, equip students for life-long information proficiency, increase faculty research impact, create more opportunities for interdisciplinary experimentation, and optimize access to collections and resources, including marginalized and hidden histories and cultures.
We are seeking a team member to help us educate the next generation of leaders and enable research that solves our most pressing problems. We are looking for a forward-looking and user-centered problem solver ready to join our collaborative environment and transform library services.
The Cataloging and Metadata Assistant is a member of the Vanderbilt Libraries’ Cataloging and Metadata Services, a team responsible for advancing the library’s user discovery services. The person will assist in cataloging Spanish and Portuguese materials in the library collections and making them readily available to the faculty, students, and researchers at Vanderbilt University and beyond via the online library catalog.
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Performs copy cataloging by downloading and editing records for materials in Spanish and Portuguese languages.
  • Performs catalog maintenance by editing and updating bibliographic and holdings records in Alma, the Library’s online catalog.
  • Prepares basic descriptions for Spanish and/or Portuguese books that require original cataloging.
  • Handles requests for Spanish and Portuguese record correction and update.
  • Works on various metadata remediation and improvement projects within the department and across the library.
  • Applies automated functions and tools in Alma for batch data editing and updating.
  • Participates in departmental and library-wide activities.
  • Stays current with changes in library technology and practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Bachelor’s degree or the equivalent combination of education and experience is necessary.
  • Proficiency in Spanish language is required. Additional proficiency in Portuguese language is preferred.
  • Knowledge of library resource description and practices, including the relationships between bibliographic, holdings, and item records, is necessary.
  • Experience working with a library management system is necessary; experience using Alma and Primo discovery is preferred.
  • Experience using OCLC Connexion or WorldShare Metadata Services is preferred.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively is necessary.
  • Experience using Windows computers and Office 365 suite and Zoom is preferred.
