The University of Miami Libraries seeks nominations and applications for a collaborative, innovative, service-oriented professional to serve as Scholarly Communications Librarian for the Performing Arts & Humanities.  Under the direction of the Head of Research Information Services, and within the division of Digital Strategies, the Scholarly Communications Librarian for the Performing Arts & Humanities will build services to support research output visibility and research impact for Frost School of Music (FSOM) and humanities faculty.  The person in this role will be embedded within the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library and will collaborate directly with subject liaison librarians and faculty stakeholders to build the Scholarship@Miami knowledge base to ensure that the bibliographic citations of research outputs by the Frost School of Music faculty and other humanities faculty are represented in campus research information management systems, discovery systems and search engines.  They will work with the Head of Research Information Services, Assessment Librarian, and additional campus experts to identify methods and create workflows to address gaps in the capture of research outputs for FSOM and other related humanities faculty.  The Scholarly Communications Librarian for the Performing Arts & Humanities will promote and advance the Libraries’ research information hub, Scholarship@Miami, as the place to host creative works and other research and creative output for faculty and students.  In collaboration with the Head of the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library, they will provide consultation services to FSOM and humanities faculty for building scholarly identities and increasing the visibility of research, as well as serve as a resource for questions regarding authors’ rights, Creative Commons licensing, copyright, fair use, and other scholarly communication matters coming from campus stakeholders.  They will oversee and promote the Libraries’ digital publishing services, which includes the supervision of the Digital Publishing Specialist. 

 

Key duties and responsibilities for this position will include:

 

Performance

  • Work with subject liaison librarians and faculty stakeholders, to build the Scholarship@Miami knowledge base, ensuring that the bibliographic citations of research outputs by the Frost School of Music (FSOC) faculty and humanities faculty are represented in campus research information management systems, discovery systems and search engines;
  • Work with the Head of Research Information Services, Assessment Librarian, and faculty stakeholders to identify methods and to create workflows to address gaps in the capture of research outputs for FSOM and humanities faculty;
  • Facilitate deposits of research assets of faculty and students from the FSOM and others in the performing arts and humanities to Scholarship@Miami, UM’s research information hub and institutional repository; co-ordinate with the Digital Initiatives Metadata Librarian on metadata creation for research asset deposits;
  • In collaboration with the Head of the Marta and Austin Weeks Music Library, provide assistance, training, and consultations to faculty and students from the FSOM and the UM community for building scholarly identities and assessing research impact;
  • Serve as a resource for questions regarding authors’ rights, Creative Commons licensing, copyright, fair use, and other scholarly communication matters coming from campus stakeholders; develop programming and instruction related to these issues, as needed;
  • Promote and advance the Libraries’ open access digital publishing services and initiatives;
  • Supervise the work of the Digital Publishing Specialist;
  • Stay abreast of developments in scholarly communications, open access, institutional repositories, and RIMS trends, and effectively communicate their implications to library and campus stakeholders;
  • Develop strategic relationships with people and units on campus to advance library initiatives;

Service

  • Network, collaborate, and actively participate in local, regional, national, or international organizations focused on scholarly communications;
  • Represent and promote the University of Miami Libraries in local, state-wide, regional, national, or international organizations as appropriate;
  • Serve on/participate in University organizations, committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate;
  • Participate in and/or lead library-level committees, task-forces, and/or special projects.

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Required:

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited program, or a master’s or higher degree in music, musical arts, or relevant humanities-based discipline;
  • Demonstrated experience with or advanced academic studies in music and/or the arts;
  • Knowledge of both the creative and scholarly work, and the materials needed, to support research, learning, and scholarship for students and faculty in the arts and humanities;
  • Two years or more of professional experience with scholarly communication programs and services;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the scholarly publishing environment and scholarly communications lifecycle, specific to the performing arts and humanities;
  • Demonstrated experience with institutional repository and/or research information management system (RIM) software;
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in issues, trends, and technologies related to scholarly communication and open access;
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with copyright, fair use, and authors’ rights issues in academic environments;
  • Demonstrated ability to provide in-person and online research and consultation services to researcher with varying levels of technical expertise;
  • Demonstrated ability to adjust priorities, take initiative, set goals, and complete projects;
  • Experience with successfully managing collaborative projects;
  • Commitment to fostering an environment of equity, inclusion, diversity, and access;
  • Strong commitment to user-centered library service and the ability to work flexibly and creatively in a changing and fast-paced environment with a culturally diverse population;
  • Demonstrated effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of U.S. copyright law and its application to performance-based research output;
  • Knowledge of and experience with the operations and research needs of an academic library;
  • Supervisory experience;
  • Record of promoting equity, inclusion, and awareness of diversity by including individuals of diverse identities and perspectives in research, teaching, and other work.
