Branch Manager - Desert Hot Springs/Thousand Palms

Library Systems & Services (LS&S) is seeking a full time Branch Manager 2 to oversee the day-to day-operations of the Desert Hot Springs Library and the Thousand Palms Library of the Riverside County Library System (RCLS) in both Desert Hot Springs and Thousand Palms, California.  This position will be responsible for ensuring operating procedures of both branches are executed effectively and efficiently. It will also support and build a strong partnership with their local official(s) and Friends groups, as well as develop strong patron relationships.

Thousand Palms is an unincorporated city of almost 8,000 full time and seasonal residents in Riverside County. Also known as the Art Sampson Community Library, the Thousand Palms Library is adjacent to the Desert Recreation Community Center. It serves as a central hub and prides itself in offering quality materials and programs for all ages.

Desert Hot Springs, also known as The Spa City, is nestled at the base of the San Bernardino Mountains near the Mission Creek Preserve. The new Desert Hot Springs Library is a 15,500 square foot single story building with 2 study rooms, a community meeting room, opportunity rooms, furniture with plug in technology, a teen library space, children’s library space, story time room, and a Friends of the Library bookstore. As Desert Hot Springs continues to grow and embrace diversity, the library is here to support through resource access and programming.

Position Summary: 

The Branch Manager will oversee the day-to day-operations of a larger library with approximately eight full-time employees or more. The Branch Manager supports the LS&S mission, vision, and values through exceptional leadership and dedicated patron focus. This position is also responsible for ensuring operating procedures of a library branch are executed effectively and efficiently. The Branch Manager will lead a team of library professionals who are committed to creating a thriving library in the heart of their community. Effectively support and build a strong partnership with their local official(s) and managing the patron relationship.

• Work closely with Zone Managers/Directors to plan, implement and promote the library strategic plan

• Know, understand and administer the American Library Association’s Library Bill of Rights, Freedom to Read Statement and Freedom to View Statement, recognizing that freedom of access is a fundamental tenet of a public library; in addition to these freedoms, support client discretion of materials available at your local library

• Follow all legal and policy requirements related to patron privacy and custodianship of patron records

• Other duties as assigned

An individual should possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities listed and meet the amount of education, training and/or work experience required.

• BA/BS required, MLIS preferred

• Three years supervisory experience is preferred

• Two years of progressively responsible library experience and/or administrative functions of a library, or equivalent knowledge is preferred

• Experience in a role that requires frequent interaction with customers, fulfilling the requests of customers and responsibility for addressing customer issues, questions and suggestions is preferred

• Experience analyzing and applying financial reports and library related data (usage, demographics, trends, etc.) is preferred

Physical Requirements:  

Must be able to move from place to place within the location; lift, push/pull, hold/carry of items weighing up to (25) pounds and occasional up to (35) pounds such as files, books, stacks of paper, and other materials.

?Ability to sit for long periods of time and to maintain focus on projects such as computer screens or detailed paperwork.
