FIU Library Specialist
Under minimal supervision, Library Specialist performs copy cataloging and processing of Special Collections materials, including searching the merged statewide databases for possible bibliographic records, proofreading records, checking classification numbers and controlled vocabulary, and editing bibliographic records in accordance with international, national, and state standards. Creates and improves metadata for the libraries' digital collections, as well as doing research-related tasks. Participates in department initiatives and assists with other Cataloging Department activities.
  • Performs copy cataloging of all materials in Special Collections Department, including Spanish language materials that will need cataloging by using current cataloging tools, standards and software.
  • Creates basic descriptive metadata for digital images, assigning keywords and subject headings from Library of Congress and other controlled vocabularies, creating basic technical and structural metadata, performing basic authority work, verifying and enhancing existing descriptive information, resolving basic indexing problems, and conducting quality control. Performs research-related activities to accurately describe the digital items.
  • Participates in metadata remediation projects by reviewing and fixing record metadata and assists with other department projects.
  • Attends training and keeps abreast of new cataloging rules, standards, and technology, at national, state, and local level, to upgrade cataloging knowledge and skills.

Requirements Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of related experience or Bachelor's degree and two (2) years of related experience.
Departmental Preferences:
  • Working knowledge of cataloging tools, technologies, and resources, such as Catalogers' Desktop, Classification Web, and the LC online catalog.
  • Experience with complex data in any field including (but not limited to) Latin American and Caribbean history, politics, arts, education, and economy.
  • Understanding of metadata standards, schemas, best practices and applications for digital content produced from the scanning of archival material.
  • Ability to read and understand written documentation and make intellectual decisions based on a set of standards or rules.
  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn new skills to meet changes in procedures, processes, and technology.
  • Bilingual preferred (English/Spanish)
