Job Description

The Director, Library is responsible for providing leadership and strategic direction while advancing the role of the library and learning center in information & digital literacy, lifelong learning, and the overall mission for the college. The position provides leadership for all library operations including instruction, resource allocation, strategic planning, staffing, program development, and evaluation of library resources and services. This position plans for and responds to students, faculty, community, and technology needs and represents the library and learning centers both internally across Lone Star College and externally.
  1. Develop vision and long-range planning strategies for the library. Provide strategic direction and leadership for the libraries and learning resources.
  2. Ensure representation of the Library in College and System-wide planning, governance, task forces, and committees. Represent campus library on LSC-wide committees and participate in local, state, and national activities, continuing education, and relevant conferences and workshops, as budget allows.
  3. Collaborate with HCPL leadership to enrich lives and serve the educational needs of both students and the community in a joint library setting.
  4. Forecast, develop, administer, and assess approved library allocations and expenses, balancing fiscal responsibility with a budget that supports the College's mission and goals.
  5. Develop and direct information and digital literacy education initiatives and curriculum for the college. Direct programming initiatives supporting information & digital literacy, student success, and personal enrichment for students, staff, faculty, and the community
  6. Collaborate with colleagues in administrative, educational, and instructional services at the College and System level to ensure effective learning resources, programs, and services.
  7. Develop procedures and administer policies that support both the College and overall LSC mission, purpose, and value.
  8. Regularly evaluate and provide reports and updates on programs, collections, and the effectiveness of services.
  9. Oversee the operational aspects of LSC’s library services and human resources to meet the needs of students, faculty and the community. Provide resources and services that effectively serve a diverse population of library users with fairness and respect.
  10. Evaluate trends in learning resources, educational technology, information literacy, and digital literacy instruction, and remain current in all aspects of library and learning resources services. Remain current in all aspects of library and learning resources services appropriate to the community college environment through review of professional literature, participation in local, state, and national activities.
  11. Advise and assist in the planning and design of library and learning resource facilities, equipment, and infrastructure components. Lead the incorporation of technological advances in information consumption & creation and supervise the ongoing instruction of the use of technology.
  12. Maintain compliance with local, state, and federal laws and guidelines, including but not limited to accrediting agency guidelines, copyright laws, FERPA and privacy of library records, American with Disabilities Act, and emergency procedures.
  13. Recruit, hire, evaluate, and direct activities and staffing levels of library faculty and staff.   Develop opportunities and encourage participation in professional development activities at campus and System level, as well as externally as budget allows.
  14. Develop, collaborate, and evaluate cooperative relationships with libraries and other external agencies to ensure that agreements enhance the resources and services provided to the college and district students and faculty.
  15. Serve as part of the College Emergency Management Team in planning programs and activities that will promote the safety of the campus community as well as the ability of the campus to respond and recover in the event of an emergency.

The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.
  • Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in a Microsoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other general office equipment
  • Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position
  • Work is performed in a climate-controlled office with minimal exposure to safety hazards
  • Bachelor’s degree and least 5 years of related work experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience must include at least 3 years in a manager- or director-level position
  • Master’s degree in Library Science or Information Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution
  • At least 3 years of continuous professional and management experience in a college or university library setting
  • Experience with grant writing and/or grant management


Hiring salary range is $74,380-$85,537
Lone Star College provides a hiring salary range for all posted full-time non-faculty positions.  Where your salary offer would fall in that range is determined by your related experience and education.  Should you receive an offer of employment from Lone Star College, the resume submitted in the application process will be utilized to calculate your salary offer.  The information outlined below will provide the Office of Human Resources everything needed to determine an accurate starting salary.
