Non-exempt, Union Represented, Full-Time position

The Sacramento Public Library is the fourth largest library system in California, serving more than 1.4 million residents in the City and County of Sacramento, including the incorporated cities of Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, Isleton, and Rancho Cordova.  The system is a Joint Powers Authority, governed by a 15 member board comprised of elected officials from each of the member jurisdictions, with representation based on each jurisdiction's population.  The Authority operates 28 libraries, including the Central Library in downtown Sacramento, has over 300 staff members, contains a collection of 1.5 million volumes and an annual budget of $37 million. More than 700 thousand residents have library cards and 8 million items are circulated annually.  The Library welcomes more than 4 million visitors annually.  This is a great opportunity for qualified applicants.

Requirements The ideal candidate has a passion for public libraries and the surrounding communities the library serves. In addition to demonstrating a commitment to public library service for the community, the ideal candidate embraces new challenges; has strong and effective communication skills; builds collaborative partnerships and has strong organizational and programming skills, so that they can plan, schedule, implement and track operations. They should also have the ability to effectively lead, inspire and supervise staff, demonstrate excellent problem solving and decision-making skills, and consistently exercise sound judgment.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  1. Master's degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited university; and
  2. Three years experience as a professional librarian, preferably in area of specialization or assignment, including two years in supervisory capacity.

Other Requirements:

  • A valid driver's license may be required for some positions at the time of appointment.
  • Keyboarding, word processing, or entering data at a speed and accuracy level necessary for successful job performance.
