Research and Instruction Librarian: Liaison to Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education

The Health Sciences Library System (HSLS) at the University of Pittsburgh invites applications to fill an open Research and Instruction Librarian position. HSLS is looking for a motivated, collaborative, enthusiastic individual who can thrive in a dynamic and fast-paced environment to join our team. This position has the flexibility to allow candidates to highlight unique skills or experiences that enhance and complement existing services.
 
Research and Instruction librarians are key members of the Research, Instruction and Clinical Information Services team.  This position reports to the Assistant Director for Liaison Services and Instruction and provides a broad range of research and scholarly support and instruction services to faculty, staff and students, with a focus on medical education for the University of Pittsburgh and graduate medical education programs at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC).
 
Pitt’s School of Medicine (SOM) is currently in the process of curriculum reform and redesign, making this an exciting time for this position to collaborate with faculty and other HSLS librarians on innovative integration within the SOM curriculum.
 
Specific responsibilities:
 
Liaison to Medical Education and Graduate Medical Education
 
  • Serve as the liaison to medical students and medical education faculty
  • Serve as liaison to residents and fellows within UPMC Graduate Medical Education
  • Provide instruction on research and clinical resources, information literacy, and other specialized classes to support research and evidence-based practice in face-to-face, online, and hybrid learning environments
  • Conduct new student, resident/fellow, and faculty orientation sessions
  • Work collaboratively to integrate the library into health sciences curricular, research, and clinical programs; including marketing library resources, giving presentations to departments, recommending instruction topics, assessing needs and developing new classes
  • Coordinate with UPMC hospital librarians to provide targeted education to residents and fellows within the GME program
  • Gather feedback about library services and resources from stakeholders; for example, by facilitating a library advisory committee
  • Serve on committees or working groups involving new educational technologies in medical education, such as virtual and augmented reality
 
Research and Instruction Librarian
 
  • Develop and maintain specialized knowledge of library and University resources to effectively meet user’s information needs
  • Provide core reference services; including in-depth consultation, mediated database searching, identifying appropriate resources, search strategy development, and recommendations for citation management, download and output
  • Design and build complex literature searches to support systematic reviews, and other multifaceted literature searches
  • Collaborate with other liaisons and HSLS team members, including those from Data Services, Scholarly Publishing, Molecular Biology Information Services, and Technology Integration
  • Stay current with health sciences education trends, curricular structures, pedagogical methods and innovative instructional delivery
  • Cultivate partnerships and collaborate with library and University personnel on projects including grants, papers, poster presentations, or other creative undertakings
  • Share expertise and results of research with other information professionals and members of the academic community via publication in refereed journals, poster sessions and/or presentations at professional meetings 
  • Serve on appropriate internal and external committees and participate in relevant regional and national library, medical education, and health sciences professional organizations and associations
  • Monitor trends in health sciences librarianship and participate in relevant continuing education opportunities in librarianship, medical education, and health sciences disciplines or practices
 

Work Environment
 
  • This position is for a full-time faculty, appointment-stream librarian.
  • Appointment will be at the rank of Librarian I, II or III, depending on qualifications and experience. Salary range: 55,000-73,000.

  • HSLS offers flexible work arrangements which include the option to work up to 15 hours remote/week.
  • The library is housed within Scaife Hall, which is undergoing an extensive remodel and renovation. Due to construction in library spaces, the position is likely to be more fully remote, apart from in-person meeting and instruction requests, from August 2022- August 2023 to enable more comfortable working conditions.

Requirements Required qualifications
 
  • Master's degree from ALA-accredited institution or equivalent combination of relevant Master's degree and research or clinical experience
  • Health sciences, clinical, or research background
  • Demonstrated experience searching biomedical literature using databases such as PubMed
  • Demonstrated experience providing instruction or delivering presentations
  • Commitment to including individuals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, races, ethnicities, gender, sexual orientation and perspectives in research, teaching and service
  • Experience working collaboratively and independently with varied groups
  • Demonstrated ability to respond effectively to changing needs and priorities, showing initiative and flexibility
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, prioritize, coordinate and implement projects and bring them to a conclusion in a timely fashion
  • Proven commitment to excellent customer service
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and communication skills, both oral and written, including the ability to actively listen, understand and articulate user needs

Preferred qualifications
 
  • Experience in an academic or health sciences library
  • Experience supporting medical students, residents, or fellows
  • Experience developing searches to address patient care questions
  • Experience collaborating on systematic reviews or other complex review projects
  • Experience designing and conducting library instruction for adult learners
  • Experience with assessment, educational technology or instructional design
