The OSU-Cascades Library is seeking a Director. This is a full-time (1.00 FTE), 12-month, professional faculty position.

The OSU-Cascades Library houses information and technology resources to support student success. It offers a variety of individual and collaborative study spaces. The library is central to the mission of OSU-Cascades, supporting students as they develop the knowledge and critical thinking ability to lead informed lives, serve their communities and enhance their careers. The primary users of the OSU-Cascades Library are the 1,300 OSU students and 148 faculty working and studying in Bend. OSU Libraries also provide access to digital resources to researchers at all OSU campuses and locations.

The OSU-Cascades campus is undergoing significant expansion, with plans to create a 128-acre campus for up to 5,000 in the next decades. The OSU-Cascades librarian applies specialized knowledge of information science and technology to identify, acquire, evaluate, organize and make available resources to support the current student and faculty population at OSU’s Bend campus. They are an engaged and active contributor to the campus community, engaging in a collaborative planning process to ensure that the OSU-Cascades library continues to serve the campus as it grows.

The OSU-Cascades Library Director reports to the Delpha and Donald Campbell Dean of Libraries at Oregon State University. They are also supported closely by the Program Director of Arts and Sciences, who is available to help with day-to-day decisions and understanding the Cascades campus context. The OSU-Cascades Library Director is a member of the Oregon State University Libraries and Press (OSULP) management team and contributes to the overall planning and management of OSULP. They represent the interests of the OSU-Cascades community on the OSU Libraries Collections Council. They meet regularly with the OSU-Cascades Academic Affairs Program Coordinators. They build and sustain relationships with the faculty and staff across all programs and disciplines at OSU-Cascades. They enhance the visibility of library services and connect students and faculty at OSU-Cascades to expert help from OSU Librarians in information literacy, scholarly communication, data management, learning space design, copyright and intellectual property. They communicate regularly with other library faculty to share strategies, allocate responsibilities and identify opportunities.

Librarians contribute to the teaching mission of the university and often work in partnership with faculty in colleges, departments and programs. The Library Director engages in formal and informal teaching of internal and external audiences, including other library departments. Teaching activities include: workshops featuring library services, collections and research support; 1:1 consultations; training exercises; developing online learning guides and asynchronous tutorials. Librarians also work collaboratively with faculty to develop and improve research and inquiry-based assignments.

OSULP librarians participate in service activities within OSULP and OSU. They find relevant service opportunities within the library profession, and are members of professional associations at the regional, national & international level. In addition to professional development support provided by OSULP, the OSU-Cascades Library Director will receive $600 annually to support travel to OSU locations, & $1,800 to support professional development & travel.
 
Management and Administration (60%)
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of the OSU-Cascades library, including development and management of policies and processes that maintain efficient and timely workflows within the unit.
  • Monitors emerging trends in learning space design, including the application of learning technology to support the ongoing improvement of library services.
  • Collects and analyzes data, engages with user communities, and compiles reports to inform and explain decisions about services and systems.
  • Establishes local policies and procedures, including open hours and space use. Documents workflows, policies and procedures and makes that documentation transparently available to partners and library users where appropriate.
  • Oversees a technology collection including troubleshooting, recommending new purchases, and instructing patrons in the use in conjunction with other OSU-Cascades departments and University Information and Technology.
  • Works collaboratively with OSULP colleagues to ensure that library policies and workflows are consistent across all campus locations, particularly where they intersect with the integrated library systems.
  • Supervises a team of 5-10 student workers. Tasks include: planning, assigning and approving work; coaching and mentoring; giving appropriate feedback on performance; hiring, firing and training.
  • Participates as a member of the OSULP Library Administration, Management and Planning team (LAMP). Attends meetings, engages in strategic planning and collaborative budgeting activities.
Outreach and Instruction (15%)
  • Applies subject matter expertise in information science to promote library services and programs, including acting as a liaison to other organizations, libraries, local and regional consortia and affiliates.
  • Identifies and develops, in partnership with others where appropriate, courses, workshops and other learning activities and materials to help OSU students develop needed research skills.
  • Provides 1:1 training and instruction to facilitate access to information, effective research skills, and use of library systems.
Professional Service (15%)
  • Represents the OSU-Cascades Library and its users on OSULP and University committees, task forces and project groups.
  • Identifies service opportunities related to the primary assignment by participating in regional, national, or international professional organizations and societies.
Partnerships and Innovative Programs (10%)
  • Explores evolving community needs and develops and maintains services and programs that address those needs.
  • Participates in cross-departmental task forces and work groups focused on improving library services and collections.

Requirements Required Qualifications
  • ALA-Accredited Master’s Degree with at least 2 years of full-time, professional experience in a library or a Bachelor’s Degree with at least 4 years of full-time experience working in a library.
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity.
  • Demonstrated record of success managing projects, initiatives, or programs.
  • Ability to provide effective supervision for library student workers, including: hiring/firing, providing useful feedback, training and coaching.
  • Ability to build productive collaborative relationships with colleagues, including colleagues on different OSU campuses.
  • This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Demonstrated experience supervising employees, students or volunteers
  • Demonstrated experience building partnerships in an academic setting.
  • Demonstrated experience working in a branch library setting
  • Demonstrated experience teaching research skills and concepts in 1:1, course or workshop settings.
  • Demonstrated experience creating research guides, tutorials or other learning materials in support of teaching research skills and concepts.
