We intend to hire for one position at either the Librarian classification (PLB1/3A) requisition #22003598 or Specialist Librarian classification (PLB2/4A) requisition #22003853, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please indicate in your cover letter the classification level (Librarian or Specialist Librarian) you wish to be considered for or indicate both. This position is eligible for a combination of on-campus and remote work. Work arrangement options will be discussed during the hiring process
The University of Iowa Libraries is seeking a Digital Projects Librarian to digitize material including rare books, manuscript collections, scrapbooks, and photographic prints and negatives. Reporting to the Digital Processing Coordinator Librarian, the Digital Projects Librarian manages digitization projects, photographs material requiring professional handling, and ensures the creation of quality digital files for inclusion in the UI Libraries digital collections.
Specific duties and responsibilities include:
  • Digitizes collection material to fulfill specialized patron requests and complete programmatic project goals. Operates digital imaging equipment to produce high-resolution images making decisions regarding image composition, cropping, and alignment in accordance with digitization best practice.
  • Coordinates workflows for assigned projects including the retrieval of material from repository and return of material to repository after digitization. Performs digitization readiness assessments to inform planning of future digitization projects.
  • Collaborates with staff in Conservation & Collections Care on issues related to conservation treatment before and after digitization and on proper care and handling of collections during digitization.
  • Collaborates with metadata staff to capture descriptive and technical metadata for digital objects in preparation for repository ingest.
  • Coordinates outsourced digitization projects with external vendors as needed; inventories and prepares materials for shipment.
  • Contributes to departmental planning and the formulation of new policies and procedures.
  • Maintains current knowledge of digitization technologies and best practices.
  • Contributes to the profession through service, research, publishing, and/or teaching.
  • Participates in and contributes to relevant library and campus planning initiatives and committees.
  • Actively supports the University of Iowa Libraries commitment to diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI) in the workplace.
  • Additional job duties as assigned based on individual knowledge, skills, and abilities.

The Libraries will be filling this position at one of two levels. You must indicate in your cover letter the level of classification (Librarian and/or Specialist Librarian) you wish to be considered for or indicate both. The hiring salary range for the two classifications is $52,500 - $70,000

Requirements Required Qualifications:
  • A graduate degree in library and information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
  • To qualify at the Specialist Librarian level: a minimum of two years of full-time professional academic library experience or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a team-based setting where consultation, flexibility, collaboration, and cooperation are essential.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity in an academic environment, in a workplace setting, and/or in the community.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience with software used in the department including one or more of the following: Adobe Creative Suite (Acrobat, Bridge, Photoshop), Capture One, ABBYY FineReader.
  • Familiarity with photography concepts and terminology.
  • Experience digitizing material types typically found in libraries and archives.
  • Demonstrated ability to inspect library items for completeness and condition.
  • Work experience in a research library setting.
