Department Head, Student Learning and Engagement
The University of Arizona Libraries (UAL) seeks an experienced, engaged and imaginative leader for our Student Learning & Engagement (SLE) Department.  Within the department are four focused units:
  • CATalyst Studios and Experiential Learning (including our makerspace),
  • Instructional Design and eLearning,
  • Learning and Student Success, and
  • Reference and Research Consultation.
These units work together to help ensure SLE is instrumental in student learning and success across campus, including through the strategic and selective integration of information and digital literacy into the curriculum. Through partnerships with a diverse range of campus programs, we help to build students’ research, digital and information literacy, and maker skills. We invest in activities designed to foster a sense of belonging, and we collaborate with campus partners on ways to engage with students from underrepresented populations, including first year, first generation, transfer, and international students. We strive in our efforts to create inclusive and equitable spaces and services that offer access to innovative technologies and a broad range of expertise.
The department head works closely with department members to facilitate a shared vision and commitment to the strategic priorities of the Libraries, particularly those focusing on teaching, learning and student success.  The department comprises 16 employees including the department head, ten librarians, and six staff members.  Librarian portfolios include both functional and liaison duties with responsibility for providing instruction in assigned areas.
The incumbent facilitates and supports UAL’s inclusive and dynamic instructional programming for undergraduate and graduate students, collaborating with UAL department heads in Research Engagement (RE), Health Sciences Library (HSL) and Special Collections (SC).  The department head leads and coordinates the work of the department in all Main Campus areas of undergraduate education, information literacy instruction, needs assessment, reference services and outreach.  The head works in partnership with the leadership of RE, SC, and HSL to align the departments’ work in the area of graduate education.
The incumbent provides leadership (facilitation, influence, guidance) and management oversight (hiring, training, coaching, evaluating department members and requesting, allocating and monitoring funds) to ensure department members reach their potential and are able to succeed in unit, department, and library-wide activities.  The head supports the professional development and growth of staff, including coaching and guiding library faculty through the promotion and continuing status process.  The incumbent represents the Libraries in collaborative campus and community (local, state, national) activities concerning undergraduate education, outreach and information literacy.
The SLE department head is a member of Cabinet, the administrative leadership team for the University of Arizona Libraries, and participates in or sponsors library-wide cross-functional or campus-wide projects.  As a Cabinet member, the incumbent participates in library-wide policy development, budget allocation and management oversight for library projects and processes.
The position promotes the department’s commitment to customer-focused and library-wide systems thinking by sharing the larger context in which the Libraries operates. The head fosters a commitment to the Libraries’ mission, vision, and values through shared understanding.
The department head will also be appointed to a continuing-status track, academic professional position at the rank of Associate or Full Librarian. Incumbents are members of the general faculty and are entitled to all accompanying rights and privileges granted by the Arizona Board of Regents and the University of Arizona. Retention and promotion are earned through achieving a record of excellence in position effectiveness, scholarship, and service. Compensation includes a base salary linked to academic rank plus a stipend for department head responsibilities.
