USC Libraries at the University of Southern California (Los Angeles, CA) invites creative, collaborative, and outstanding candidates to fill this full-time continuing appointment-track faculty position with an anticipated start date of October 2022 or sooner. We are looking for candidates with experience in providing information and instruction services in an academic or research library setting; experience with assessing instruction services and programs; and a commitment to delivering high quality, student-centered public services to diverse user populations. Position Responsibilities and Duties

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Teaching, Learning and Research Engagement, the Head of Instruction and Assessment will:

  • Lead the implementation of scholarly literacies outcomes across the curriculum through instruction sessions, workshops, assignment design, and other learning opportunities
    • Scholarly literacies is an umbrella concept that unites multiple, interrelated literacies that exist on a spectrum: information literacy, primary source literacy, digital literacy, data literacy, visual literacy, and other ways of knowing, creating, and thinking critically.
  • Lead and coordinate the Libraries’ general instruction services
  • Coordinate the assessment of library instructional services and online learning materials to inform continuous improvement
  • Supervise at least two librarians: Information Literacy Instruction Librarian and Instructional Design and Assessment Librarian
  • Work closely with Specialized Collections and other library departments with archival collections to promote primary source literacy across the curriculum and to train library faculty and staff in all stakeholder departments to establish baseline competencies in primary source literacy, including materials handling and access
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to create opportunities for staff and librarians to learn about current, new, and emerging frameworks, standards, and practices related to pedagogy and learning (e.g., open pedagogy, critical information literacy)
  • Provide in-person, online and hybrid instruction and in-person and online reference services
  • Participate in meetings, committees, and other communities of practice within the Libraries and USC related to teaching, pedagogy, learning theory, and general education
  • Engage in professional organizations, research, or publishing that will have a significant, positive impact on the USC Libraries strategic plan, and advance the University’s strategic plan and vision
  • Duties may include weekend and evening hours and other duties may be assigned. The option of a hybrid (on-campus and remote) is available. The position will be based at the University Park campus

Experience and Qualifications


Minimum qualifications: MLS from an ALA-accredited program or non-U.S. equivalent is typically required for a librarian appointment at USC. In addition, candidates must provide evidence of:

  • At least two years of management and supervisory experience
  • Experience with developing and facilitating library instruction in a college or university setting
  • Experience with teaching information literacy and primary source literacy
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively as part of a team within a culturally diverse community of students, staff, and faculty
  • Ability to work independently and exhibit effective planning, organizational, and time management skills
  • Knowledge of current and emerging issues, practices, trends, and technologies that support pedagogy and inclusive teaching and learning in academic library and/or university environments
  • Commitment to inclusion, diversity, equity, belonging, and accessibility within teaching and learning services and experiences

Desirable Qualifications:

  • At least 3-5 years of management and supervisory experience
  • Experience with developing, implementing, and leading creative programs and services related to instruction and public services
  • Commitment to delivering student-centered public services to diverse user populations
  • Demonstrated awareness of and interest in experimenting with new and emerging practices in instruction and assessment
  • Experience with teaching digital literacy, data literacy and/or visual literacy

Faculty Appointment Rank and Salary

Rank: Assistant University Librarian or commensurate with experience and qualifications

Librarians at USC have faculty status. This is a full-time, continuing appointment track position. Appointment to the continuing appointment track requires the potential to meet the University’s criteria for granting continuing appointment—excellence in librarianship—which librarians achieve by having a significant impact on the development and/or implementation of high-quality collections and/or services. Additionally, librarians must demonstrate the expectation of continued excellence and growth in professional expertise. Starting minimum salary for faculty at USC: $72,000. Administrative appointments receive a stipend. Rank and salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.
