Collection Development and Reference Librarian

Darien Library (CT) seeks an innovative, community-minded librarian to be an active part of a close-knit, forward-thinking reference team. The ideal candidate is highly collaborative and embodies compassion and empathy in all interactions.

Reporting to the Head of Knowledge & Learning Services, the person in this role will serve as the lead buyer of Darien Library’s nonfiction collections, including print and electronic works. As part of the Knowledge & Learning Services Department, the candidate will work to position Darien Library as a bastion of information and knowledge by curating our resources to meet the interests of the community, responding to current events and trends, and predicting future interests. This opportunity is perfect for someone who will think creatively about the future of nonfiction collections and is passionate about going above and beyond to help our patrons meet their information needs.

Responsibilities include:

Collection Development

  • Develop, coordinate, implement, and assess current and long-range planning for nonfiction collection management.
  • Oversee an efficient and effective selection of materials in all formats, working closely with the entire Knowledge & Learning Services Department.
  • Track, adapt, and adopt best practices for collection development. Update the Collection Development Policy as needed.
  • Ensure the effective and appropriate use of all funds in a budget of over $80,000 annually. Create and maintain budget strategies for the general collection, and use of gift funds and resources, shifting funds to meet changing collection needs such as print to electronic, and more.


  • Assist patrons to find and use library materials or provide referral to other sources as part of regular shifts on the Reference Desk.
  • Participate in Department projects and programs, including providing input on additions and cancellations of electronic and print resources.


  • Collaborate with the Publicity Manager, User Experience Department, and other Library departments to share information with patrons and staff on a variety of collections activities including displays and booklists, and raising awareness of opportunities for acquiring new formats.

This is a full-time position (37.5 hour/week) that will include weekdays, evenings, and up to two weekends per month. 

Salary begins at $60,000 and is commensurate with experience. Salary includes generous vacation, sick, and personal leave. Ample opportunities for professional development available. Health benefits and town pension are included with this position.

Qualifications & Skills

  • MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited library and information sciences graduate program required.
  • 3-5 years' experience with collection development and reference.
  • Knowledge of purchasing titles via Titlesource360 and OverDrive is a plus.
  • Experience serving diverse clientele.
  • Familiarity with Spanish, French, or Mandarin preferred.
