Noche de Cuentos: Storytelling with Xavier Garza and Mariana Llanos

Noche de Cuentos: Storytelling with Xavier Garza and Mariana Llanos was a two-part author series celebrating storytelling for Hispanic Heritage Month held at Capitol Hill Library in south Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

Capitol Hill Library’s first Noche de Cuentos event was held on September 20, 2019 and featured award-winning author and artist Xavier Garza. That morning, coordinated by our Children’s Librarian Gloria Melchor, Mr. Garza visited nearby Shidler Elementary School where he did a storytelling, talked about the importance of reading, and held a Q & A session for the students.

The second Noche de Cuentos event was held on October 9, 2019, and featured local author Mariana Llanos, originally from Peru, who writes books and poetry for children in English and in Spanish.

Ms. Llanos read her most recent book Luca’s Bridge / El Puente de Luca and the attendees colored and decorated a variety of birds printed on cardstock.  The birds were then put on a ribbon to create a hope garland.  The craft was chosen by the author to tie in with her story in which the birds symbolize migration, hope, and freedom. The program was enjoyed by 15 adults and children.
