About Rose Treviño

The Rose Treviño Memorial Scholarship honors the life and legacy of a children's librarian at heart who dedicated her career to serving Hispanic communities. Sadly, Treviño passed away on April 30, 2010 at the age of 58. She was from San Antonio, Texas.

Throughout her 35-year career, Treviño worked tirelessly to extend and improve library services to Latino children. Her most recent position was as youth services coordinator at the Houston Public Library, prior to her retirement in October 2009. An avid advocate of Latino children's literature, she wrote Read Me a Rhyme in Spanish and English (2009), and championed El día de los niños/El día de los libros.

Treviño was an active member of several library professional associations, including serving as chair of REFORMA's Pura Belpré Award Committee. She made numerous contributions to the library profession, and is remembered as an exceptional woman and librarian. She embodied REFORMA's values and always worked very hard to promote reading and library services to Latinos and the Spanish speakers, especially for children.

As a testament to Treviño's legacy, REFORMA members have created a commemorative scholarship in her name. The association has a long tradition of offering library education and professional development scholarships at both the chapter and local level. A scholarship is also a fitting tribute to a library leader who had a strong passion for her profession, and encouraged others to follow in her direction.

In a 2008 interview with Aline Pereira on PaperTigers.org, Treviño noted, "The library field is not a field to choose if you are looking for monetary rewards. It is a field to choose if you are looking to make a difference in the life of a child by dedicating yourself to bringing the best in children's literature to them and by instilling in them a love of learning. It is very important for children to have good role models. It is with much satisfaction that I look back at my own decision. I know that I made the best one for myself when I decided to become a librarian."
